JOANNE & JAKE
Monday, April 06, 2009

'There are no friends on a powder day.'  Or so the saying goes among skiers. It's inevitable. The snow begins to envelope the hills in its sweet tastiness and otherwise great plans give way to the quest for face shots and long days of knee-deep powder. This is true...unless you are Joanne & Jake.

Only such a power couple - so full of life - could draw up plans for a wedding that would trump this powder-day rule...and bring in a guest list chalk full of outdoor aficionados, Skiing Magazine adventurers, and do I say it - Canadians.

On Sunday, the Canadians brought the weather with them. And the fun too.

Joanne & Jake are the type of people you can't help but admire. They are the creative types. Adventurers. Authentic, no holds barred. All with the sort of humility that many aspire to but few attain. Joanne is a well-traveled, sharp-shooting architect. Jake - the Editor-in-Chief of Skiing Magazine: see also witty journalist guised as a ski bum. Put the two together, give them a map - and you've got a story worth listening to. Sit down. Grab a beer. They will make you laugh.

Given this combination, it was with deep respect that the task of shooting their wedding would become. They know photography. They know clean lines and soft light and composition. But more than that, they understand what is real, what is true, what is them.

Thank you, Jake & Joanne, for the honor and trust of documenting your special day - and more than that, for a glimpse into your lives and the people you choose to share it with.

Some boast skills with the suit-and-tie knot. Others are more suited for knots of the mountain climbing variety.

*see above. Some find adventure anywhere, any time. Case in point: This is how Jake spent his time waiting to see Joanne for the first time.

For the first time. (The incredible Jessica of The Face Lab did Joanne's make-up.)

Back to their roots (and her boots) for some outdoor frolicking.

(Note: They do not frolick on a regular basis - despite appearing otherwise well-suited for J. Crew. I say this because they fear the very idea of that or anything that resembles a romantic comedy.)

I never said they didn't know how to have fun!

American Gothic. Scratch that - Canadian Gothic.

Flowers via European Flower Shop.

Did I mention they will make you laugh? I guess this proves it's never too late to become what you might have been.

The big moment.

The details of their day were amazing - organic and simple. These designs were brought to life by the very-talented Heather Dwight of Calluna Events. Alli at BirdDog Press hand-crafted the place cards and table numbers.

A family full of writers makes for a series of toasts worthy of publishing. Everyone had a go at the mic - even the littlest lady of the family put in her two cents. As a finale to a series of 4 or 5 speeches, Jake toasted Joanne in a laugh-till-you-cry speech.

Loved their cupcakes - the unique cupcake flags courtesy of the exquisite Alli at BirdDog Press.

Hora!

Congrats Joanne & Jake! You truly set the bar high for what it means to live with joy, intensity and spontaneity. Enjoy the surf in Costa Rica, my friends.

A big thank you to Colby Brown for joining to shoot.

much love,

Katie

JENNI & CHRIS' WEDDING
Friday, April 03, 2009

It always comes as such as beautiful surprise to meet couples for the first time at their destination weddings.  No phone call or back-and-forth set of emails can really bring to life the true spirit of this couple and the people they fill their lives with. Sure I had an idea for what Jenni & Chris might be like - pictures that suggested they knew how to have a good time, traveled well and traveled often, a seemingly laid-back couple. Sure enough, though, they quickly surpassed my expectations, becoming fast friends and familiar faces with a luminous and genuine presence.

Jenni & Chris decided on a seaside wedding in Naples, Florida - joined by 170 of their closest family and friends, the day couldn't have been more perfect. They were married off the coast of Gulf of Mexico at Naple's Port Royal Club. Now on to the story!

anticipation.

We love parents. really.

The wedding party took trolleys down Naple's 5th Avenue to the ceremony and reception at the Port Royal Club. Jenni & her Dad were very sweet during this ride, reflecting on how all the planning was coming down to this very important moment.

It became very clear that they are so true to one another.

Not a bad spot to embrace newlywed status.

We quickly learned that Jenni & Chris find laughter in everything. It is nothing short of contagious!

The details. I loved this place card idea for a seaside beach wedding.

I don't know who had more fun playing on the beach, Jenni & Chris - or all the kids!

A very ambient cocktail hour at the Port Royal Club. Their reception easily flowed from the outdoors in.

The exquisite details for this "Creamy Dreamy Wedding" came to fruition, much in part to their visual designer 50 Fifty Floral Art.  Amazing!

LET THEM EAT CAKE! Jenni & Chris cut their cake upon entering the reception. This is the first time I had seen this flow of events and loved the sense of togetherness it immediately created among their guests.

First dance.

My favorite series from the day of Jenni & her dad.

Jenni's sister gave a very heartfelt toast. The pursing of her lips says it all.

Their band was out of this world! They flew in the highly-rated and uber-talented Complete Desire from Atlanta - I'm not sure I've ever seen a band break it down quite like they did.

Jenni & Chris aren't too bad on the dance floor themselves.

Congrats Jenni & Chris! We are so grateful to have been a part of your very special weekend. A special thanks to the very talented Kate Borgelt who joined me in shooting.

much love,

Katie

ANDREA & SCOTT - ENGAGED
Thursday, April 02, 2009

After Story was born, I told myself that I would take 6 weeks before heading back behind the camera.  And on exactly 6 weeks to the day I picked up a camera again for Andrea and Scott's engagement session.  It was so much fun to be shooting again and I'm so happy to be back in full swing.

Andrea and Scott are such an incredible couple.  San Francisco is home to them now but they will be tying the knot in Boulder, Colo. this coming June.   They love to do triathlons and I find them completely inspiring!  Scott recently did a full Ironman - talk about an INCREDIBLE accomplishment.   They are such a great couple and I couldn't be happier to have the chance to get to know them more.

Congrats Andrea and Scott!
